I am planning a trip to the Channel Islands: Jersey, Guernsey, and Sark. I remember Jersey and Guernsey cows from my childhood when many people in my home area kept cows and we learned to tell them apart. The Jersey cows were beautiful and gave rich, creamy milk. I’m not sure if I’ll take Claire with me in my mind, but probably. I am sure I could imagine a mystery set there. The Channel islands were the only area of Britain that was occupied by the Germans in the Second World War. I’m sure I’ll get to learn a lot about that while I’m there. I’ve read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows which is the way I like to get my information about a place I’m going to visit. I read as much fiction as I can find and then bring the fact sheets about topography and history with me to consult while I’m there. I’ve read everything Gerald Durrell’s written, I think, many years ago and hope to visit the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust on Jersey. His fist book was My Family and Other Animals. His efforts at conservation were well ahead of his time and he left a wonderful legacy. I go on to Paris and then back to Heathrow via the Chunnel. That should be an experience.

Now is the time of year when my friends head for warm climates. Now that the Covid restrictions have eased the town has less population. They have futtered away to Mesa, Tucson, Mexico (various destinations) and Hawaii. I have been to all those wonderful places but not this year. It is tempting, especially when the temperature goes below zero. That hasn’t happened for a couple of weeks and I am getting optimistic about spring. A brave (and foolish) poppy plant has pushed up through the covering leaves in my garden. Poor thing. I expect a frost will come before February’s warmer weather.

Christmas always takes a whack of time out of my writing schedule. It’s no doubt good for me to take the time off but I’m back working.

I hope the new year is good to you all.
