October has been beautiful without its usual rains, which is a little alarming as we need the rain. Still, we did enjoy those warm, sunny days.
It has been a busy month as usual. I have been up to my ears in articles and books about the Canadian nursing sisters of World War I who left from the east coast and the west coast to serve in the Canadian Army Medical Corp. They were the first women to be designated officers in the British Empire armed forces, and they had, as lieutenants, equal pay with the men.
They were amazing women, and I am gearing up to write about them, but I haven’t found a way to get into the personalities of one or two of the women yet. It’s frustrating. I need to get committed by the first of November which is next week!
My community had an Art Crawl last week. Artists and artisans put their name and studio address in a catalogue and people come from all over to dash around the town and nearby communities, visiting the works of art—and buying. This year my writers’ group got a huge space in a garden centre where we displayed our books and the artists from Arts and Words in August displayed their art work. It was interesting, but the weather turned cold, after weeks of warmth and sunshine, and we were dressed in our ski outfits. Quite an experience. It was interesting, though, with a book launch and readings from various authors’ works and panel discussions. Too cold for many, though.
We don’t change back to Standard time this November. The previous government decided we are to stay on Daylight Savings time. This means the poor kids are going to school in the dark. Schools are starting programs about “Stay visual”, to try and prevent accidents. Last week, after the previous premier declared a snap election two years early, the population was so incensed by this action they voted him and most of his government out. Perhaps, the new government will put us back on Standard time. We’ll see. Obviously, no one is asking my opinion.
I see and hear that Christmas is coming. I suppose I should think about presents but it seems so early.
Take care all of you.
