The Face in the Mirror

I have been working this week on the revision of the Table of Contents of “The Face in the Mirror: teenagers and adoption” for Arsenal Pulp Press. While it doesn’t sound exciting–it is. I’ve been organizing with great energy, working out a better flow of information, figuring out where new information needs to go and then had a great indulgent week of research. The new Table of Contents is due next week and I’m happily learning. And writing, of course. The new ideas and practices that have evolved since the book was last published (2000) are fascinating and the changing attitudes quickly established. Not all attitudes are wonderful. The notion of “rehoming” which occurs in some areas of North America is appalling and the lack of counselling services for teens is still a problem. Teens still have no place to put their anger about being separated from their birth mothers while at the same time they feel connected to their adoptive mothers. It is still a difficult emotional world for them. I look forward to hearing from more teens, parents and birth parents who want to have their voices heard.
